The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has commenced underground tunnel excavation for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project using India’s largest rail Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The machine was launched from Vikhroli to construct a 6 Km single-tube tunnel beneath Mumbai.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project includes a 21 Km underground tunnel section. Of this, 16 Km between Sawli (Ghansoli) and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) will be excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines. Meanwhile the remaining 5 Km has already been completed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The Mixshield TBM features a 13.6 M diameter cutterhead and measures 96 M in length. It is designed to excavate beneath dense urban areas while simultaneously installing tunnel lining segments. The underground tunnel will also incorporate waterproof lining systems, real-time monitoring instruments, slurry treatment facilities, and supporting tunnelling infrastructure to ensure safe construction.
