The RG Baruah Sports Complex is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment in Guwahati, transforming the existing venue into a modern FIFA-compliant football stadium with integrated sports, spectator, and event infrastructure.
Project Overview:
The Public Works (Building & NH) Department, Assam is undertaking the redevelopment of the RG Baruah Sports Complex near Nehru Stadium, Gandhi Basti, Guwahati. Spread across an anticipated 15.4 Acres, the project will have a total construction area of 353,217 SqFt and involves an estimated construction cost of 725 INR-Crore. The department commenced the project in 2026 and plans to complete the redevelopment by 2028.
The project proposes the construction of a new stadium configured as Ground Floor + 3 Upper Floors while comprehensively modernising the existing sports complex. Planned as a 25,000-seat FIFA Category II football stadium. The redevelopment will further feature international-standard playing facilities, premium spectator seating, hospitality areas, corporate boxes, media and broadcasting infrastructure, player facilities, VIP and VVIP lounges, administrative spaces, food and beverage outlets, retail kiosks, medical facilities, parking, and integrated building services.
The development also includes modern concourses, improved circulation areas, enhanced accessibility features, landscaped public spaces, and supporting utility infrastructure. Designed as a multi-functional venue, the RG Baruah Sports Complex will be capable of hosting international football matches, national sporting events, entertainment programmes, and community gatherings throughout the year.
Meanwhile, AKA Consultants India Private Limited has been appointed as the Design Architect, Structural Engineering Consultant, and Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the project. Additionally, L&T Constructions is executing the redevelopment as the general turnkey contractor.
Recent Updates:
The project is currently under construction, with initial site setup activities in progress. As of July 2026, site establishment works continue at the project location.
