The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has floated a global tender for the VOC Port Berth No 7 container terminal project at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The authority plans to upgrade Berth No. 7 into a modern container terminal. The proposed facility will handle container vessels with capacities of up to 12,100 TEUs. The project involves an estimated investment of 517 INR-Crore. Additionally, authorities will implement the project on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis with a concession period of 30 years.
The proposed upgrade will create an annual handling capacity of around 4.2 Lakh-TEUs. The scope includes strengthening the existing berth using new piles. Authorities will also dredge the berth pocket to a depth of minus 16.5 M. Additionally, the project will install new fenders, bollards and utility infrastructure. The terminal will deploy modern cargo-handling systems such as quay cranes, rubber tyred gantry cranes, electric tractor trailers and reach stackers. Berth No. 7 is located within the inner harbour. The berth has a length of 370 M and an existing dredged depth of 11.85 M.
