World Bank approves 4,000 INR-Crore loan for Haryana water conservation project

The World Bank has approved an estimated 4,000 INR-Crore loan for Haryana’s ‘Jal Sanrakshit Haryana’ programme. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced the approval during a review meeting with senior officials. The Haryana water conservation project carries a total cost of 5,714 INR-Crore. The state will implement the programme in phases between 2026 and 2032. The initiative will cover 15 clusters spread across an anticipated 48.94 lakh Acres.

The project includes the rehabilitation of the remaining 678 canals across Haryana. Of these, 106 canals will be restored with World Bank assistance at a cost of 2,484.87 INR-Crore. Additionally, the state will rehabilitate 293 canals through state funding worth 2,230 INR-Crore. Another 279 canals will be upgraded under NABARD-supported projects. The programme will also rehabilitate 620 water channels, benefiting approximately 3.18 lakh Acres of agricultural land. Further, the state will upgrade 120 canal-based micro-irrigation projects covering nearly 56,830 Acres. The scope also includes reclamation of around two lakh Acres of waterlogged land, promotion of direct seeded rice on five lakh Acres, and crop diversification across 1.12 lakh Acres. To strengthen groundwater recharge, the project will develop 147 water bodies across seven districts.

The Haryana water conservation project aims to strengthen irrigation and water management infrastructure across the state. Additionally, the programme will support the reuse of treated wastewater from major sewage treatment plants in Jind, Kaithal, and Gurugram for irrigation purposes. The initiative will cover nearly 28,000 Acres under treated water reuse infrastructure with an estimated investment of 282.13 INR-Crore. Once completed, the project is expected to improve water availability, enhance irrigation efficiency, and support long-term water resource management across Haryana.
