Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a Northeast highway corridor linking Siliguri in West Bengal with Guwahati in Assam and Shillong in Meghalaya. The proposed 630 Km will cost an estimated 61,500 INR-Crore. Additionally, a separate expressway is proposed to connect Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh with Siliguri. The new corridor will combine new highway construction with upgrades to existing roads.
The first section will connect Siliguri and Guwahati through an anticipated 400 Km stretch. The government plans to invest an estimated 30,000 INR-Crore in this part of the project. Meanwhile, the second section will connect Jorabat, near Guwahati, with Barapani close to Shillong in Meghalaya. The proposed greenfield highway will reduce the distance between the two locations from 100 Km to 66 Km.

Moreover, the third section will connect Shillong with Silchar through a greenfield highway, replacing the current 230 Km journey with a shorter route of 165 Km. Furthermore, MoRTH has proposed an expressway to connect Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and Siliguri in West Bengal. The proposed expressway, together with the broader Northeast highway corridor, will improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and the Northeast.
The Northeast highway corridor and the upcoming expressway will link important locations across several states. Additionally, the Center has approved building a 4-lane, access-controlled corridor between Baihata Chariali near Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. This project is worth an estimated 8,970.20 INR-Crore and will cover 135.87 Km.
