The CMWSSB Water Sewerage Work (Package 1) is a major water transmission infrastructure project planned across Chennai to strengthen the city’s water sewerage & distribution network through an integrated Ring Main System.
Project Overview:
Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is undertaking Package 1 of the Chennai Ring Main System project to strengthen the city’s water supply infrastructure. Moreover, the project carries an estimated construction cost of 1,565 INR-Crore. CMWSSB commenced the project in 2026 and plans to complete it by 2030.
The Chennai water sewerage project involves the construction of a comprehensive water transmission network. It further comprises the supply and laying of 96,905 M of SAW Mild Steel (MS) pipelines and 51,442 M of Ductile Iron (DI K9) pipelines. Simultaneously it also includes 930 valves, reinforced concrete chambers, underground storage tanks, overhead tanks, and RCC surge tanks. The scope also includes the installation of vertical turbine pump sets, multiple DG sets, cement concrete works, CRS steel, pumping infrastructure, and associated electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation systems.
The project forms part of Chennai’s Ring Main System, which will also interconnect major Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), Desalination Plants (DSPs), and Water Distribution Stations (WDSs). The project will enable authorities to reroute water across the city during emergencies, maintenance activities, or localized shortages. It will also improve operational reliability and pressure management.
Meanwhile, GKC Projects Limited, VA Tech Wabag Limited, and Sri Venkatachalapathy Construction Private Limited are appointed as the general turnkey contractors to execute Package 1.

The project is currently in the pre-construction stage. As of July 2026, preparatory activities are underway, and construction is expected to commence within the next three to four months.
