The proposed NHAI Six-Lane Road Tunnel project will create a direct underground connectivity corridor between Dwarka Expressway and Nelson Mandela Marg, significantly improving traffic movement between West and South Delhi.
Project Overview:
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning the construction of a six-lane road tunnel on NH-148AE, connecting Dwarka Expressway (NH-248BB) with Nelson Mandela Marg at Vasant Kunj in Delhi. The project involves the development of an 8.1 Km-long tunnel corridor and carries an estimated construction cost of 3,549 INR-Crore. Furthermore, NHAI plans to execute the project under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. Construction is expected to commence in 2026 and is scheduled for completion by 2031.
The proposed tunnel will establish a high-capacity underground road link between West Delhi and South Delhi. It will also help decongest existing urban corridors while improving connectivity to the airport region and key business districts. The scope of work further includes tunnel excavation, construction of portal structures, ventilation systems, fire and life safety infrastructure, and drainage systems. It further includes electrical and lighting installations, traffic management systems, surveillance infrastructure, emergency response facilities, and associated highway infrastructure.
Meanwhile, NHAI has initiated the bidding process for selecting a private developer that will undertake the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the tunnel corridor. The selected concessionaire will also be responsible for maintaining the asset during the concession period.
Recent Updates:
The project is currently in the pre-construction stage. As of June 2026, NHAI has floated the tender for the selection of a private developer to execute the project under the Hybrid Annuity Model. The authority is currently undertaking the bid evaluation and developer selection process.
